The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has insisted that Ireland did not have a special deal with Apple when it came to paying its proper taxes. Mr Varadkar was responding to questions raised following his address on a debate on the future of Europe in the European Parliament this morning. Mr Varadkar was referring to a ruling by the European Commission in 2016 that Ireland granted undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion to the tech giant Apple. The Commission declared that was illegal under EU state aid rules and it ordered Ireland to recover the thirteen billion euro from Apple. However, Leo Varadkar defended Ireland today in the European Parliament.
