Ray Delaney was a man of few words. In his line of work, talk was for amateurs.

It wasn’t a bad life. You do a job here, make a friend there, stay out of the news and out of trouble. That was Ray’s code. And tonight’s job was supposed to be just like any other. A favor for an old buddy, Arnie Dokes, who ran numbers for a guy no one ever met but everyone feared. Arnie needed a little “insurance” on a deal, someone to hang back and make sure no one pulled anything stupid.

Of course, nothing’s ever simple.
