European Parliament approves new copyright rules for internet

The European Parliament today approved new copyright rules for the internet. The rules will mean that people in the creative industry such as musicians, authors and news publishers will be able to negotiate better financial deals with internet giants who use their material.

YouTube, Facebook and Google News are some of the internet household names that will be most directly affected by this legislation.

The directive also aims to ensure that the internet remains a space for freedom of expression.

The Independent MEP Marian Harkin welcomed today's vote.
