The current president of the European Parliament Martin Schulz announced this morning that he will not seek a re-election to the presidency position. That paves the way for a new president to head up the Parliament. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness is seeking the nomination from her own political group in the Parliament. She’s now canvassing for support within the European People’s Party group, the EPP. They’ll decide who they want to run from thier group in December in a vote. And then the entire Parliament will vote on the presidential candidate in January. That ballot will include all of the rest of the candidates from other political groups running for the Parliament’s top job. Mairead McGuinness says she faces a tough battle ahead.
