Relationship begins with communication/prayer. Prayer is not designed primarily for asking or petitioning God for things. Prayer is communication and communion with God. Prayer is seeking after the presence of God, the voice of God, the knowledge of God. We are being saved, changed, matured and transformed by relationship, not by knowledge or laws.
