The European Parliament will today vote on plans to curb use of antibiotics on farms.
The proposed new law will limit the use of antimicrobials in animals as a preventative measure, to halt the spread of drug resistance from animals to humans.
If implemented, giving drugs to animals will only be allowed when justified by a vet when there’s a high risk of infection.
The plans will also curb the practice of giving drugs to a group of animals when only one shows signs of infection.
The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy explains.
