Table Talk: Sharing Food, Time, and Jesus with People
“More than a Picnic with Jesus” (Luke 9:10-17)
Picnics are a fun summer tradition- a unique way to enjoy an outside meal!Our text is found in all four Gospel accounts about the miracle feeding of the 5,000+. Jesus hosts an impromptu, mega, outdoor banquet! This meal further reveals Jesus’ identity to His followers, and leads us to answer the crucial question: “Who do you say Jesus is?”
Good times, grieving times ... when misery leads to ministry (Mt.14:13)
Good times: “the apostles” share stories of ministry and mission,
getting away to rest and recoup together (Lk.9:10; Mk.6:31-32).
Grieving times: Jesus is told of John’s beheading by Herod (Mt.14:13).
Ministry time ... when compassion > grief (Lk.9:11-17)
Jesus has compassion on the multitudes even in grief.
Jesus welcomes the crowd & shares w/ them about the kingdom.
Jesus provides healing ministry.
Jesus challenges the disciples faith (Jn.6:5-7) to do much with little.
Jesus blesses the little (Jn.6:8) and it becomes more than enough!
Revealing times ... when events enact the unveiling of truth (Lk.9:11ff)
Jesus is Host (v.11)- He welcomes the crowd; seats them, feeds them.
Teacher (v.11)- He teaches about the kingdom.
Healer (v.11)- He heals those in need of healing.
Prophet > Moses (vv.12-17; miraculous wilderness feeding!).
Messiah, sent from God (v.20, “You are the Christ of God.”).
Deciding time ... Who do you say Jesus is? (Lk.9:20)
Jesus is the manna from God, the living bread (Jn.6:35, 51; cf.v.14)!
Jesus is our provider!
Jesus is our hope!
