US Close 18 Nov 16: US higher despite the possibility of a lift in rates by the FED

US sharemarkets were firmer on Thursday. Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen noted that rates were likely to rise relatively soon and this provided support to the banking sector. But the Dow Jones index was weighed down by a 3.1% decline in shares of Wal Mart. At the close, the Dow Jones index was up by 36 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index was higher by 0.5% while the Nasdaq lifted by 39 points or 0.7%.
