AM Report 20 Aug 18: Trade tensions easing and focus on growth

US sharemarkets rose on Friday on hopes for an easing of trade tensions between China and the US. There were also reports of progress on tariff issues between the US, Canada and Mexico. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index lost 0.7% on declines by shares in Nvidia (down 4.9%) and Applied Materials (7.7%). Shares in Tesla lost 8.9% on negative media and analyst reports. The Dow Jones index rose by almost 111 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.3% and the Nasdaq rose by almost 10 points or 0.1%. Over the week the Dow rose by 1.4%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.6% but the Nasdaq lost 0.3%.
