1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 ‘Speak to the Israelites and say to them: “I am the LORD your God. 3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. 4 You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the LORD your God. 5 Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.
30 Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practised before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the LORD your God.”’ (Leviticus 18:1-5, 30)
G’day! We looked recently at Leviticus 9 & 10 and saw a scene of great joy and jubilation, as well as a scene of great judgement. Then, more recently we looked together at Leviticus 16 & 17, and that great annual event in the calendar of Ancient Israel, known as the Day of Atonement and what it signified for ancient Israel. We looked at how these ancient writings applied to us today and concluding that it is because of Jesus Christ alone, every human can choose to be ‘at one’ with God and have eternal life.
Today we start looking into Leviticus 18 & 19. Here is where the rubber hits the road. Leviticus now moves on to the matter of wholeness of life and personal holiness. God gives to His people, Israel, some laws of how they were to live. Laws for such things as: food & diet, foreign nationals, justice, the poor, sex, social etiquette and tattoos. Together we explore questions such as: Why was Israel given these laws? What areas of life did these laws cover? What did Jesus Christ have to say about them?
