Hebrew (Old Testament) for tithe is “maasrah” and it means 10% or a tenth
Greek (New Testament) for tithe is “apodekatoo” and it means 10% or a tenth
It is not an offering - it is viewed biblically as a payment due to the Lord God
This tenth - the tithe - or 10% is on your gross income that you pay to the Lord
And I know most of us consider our income ‘grossly’ inadequate
And, you pay this obligation because:
1> You want to honour Him in all that you do and money represents ‘what you do’
2> You are called, as believers, to support the work of the Church and the Kingdom
3> You want to obey Him because you love Him and He instituted the tithe
4> You want to be like God and He gives abundantly
You don’t give to get …
Regretfully, many do today and God cannot and will not bless them because their heart and their motive is wrong
Foundational understanding regarding tithing:
God is the creator of everything that exist
God owns everything that there is
If you are born again then He owns you as well - “Redeemed” = purchased back
Thus ALL of what you earn and own is His because He owns you
He asks for 10% back and allows you to keep and live off of the 90%
Biblical wisdom:
10% tithe
10% savings
80% for living … out of which you make offerings and alms
No debt
There are three levels of giving:
Tithe - 10% of your gross income (you ‘pay’ your tithes)
Offerings - Whatever you decide to give because you are thankful (you ‘give’ an offering)
Alms - Whatever you decide to give to the poor (widows and orphans)
You cannot make an offering or give an alm until you have paid your tithes
