US Close 19 Dec 16 - Banks moderate after recent gains

US sharemarkets fell on Friday with investors locking in some of the recent gains. Reports that a Chinese warship seized a US underwater drone in international waters in the South China Sea gave investors a reason to shift into defensive sectors. Utilities and real estate were the best performing sectors. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was lower by almost 9 points. The S&P 500 index was down by 0.2%, while the Nasdaq fell by 20 points or 0.4%. For the week the Dow Jones rose by 0.4%, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both lost 0.1%.
