US sharemarkets were up strongly on Wednesday in response to positive earnings reports and the interest rate decision. Shares in Boeing rose 6.25% on positive full-year profit guidance. Shares in Apple rose 6.8% after reporting solid services revenues. At the close, the Dow Jones index was up by 435 points or 1.8%. The S&P500 index was up by 1.6%. And the Nasdaq index lifted by 155 points or 2.2%.
European sharemarkets were mixed on Wednesday. Luxury good retailers rose following a positive earnings report from LVMH. Shares in LVMH rose by 6.9%. But shares in German payments company Wirecard fell 13.3% on a report in the Financial times alleging financial wrongdoing. The pan-European STOXX600 index rose by 0.4%. But while the UK FTSE lifted by 1.6%, the German Dax index lost 0.3%. In London trade, shares of Rio Tinto rose by 1.4% and BHP rose by 2.6%.
