When we grow up in dysfunctional systems, we learn to protect ourselves. One of those survival mechanisms is keeping ourselves small, invisible, unknown. At the same time, we often develop a hyper vigilance to thosearound us and feel like we know everything about them. Or we can go the opposite way--overexposing ourselves and being shameless in our interactions with others.
