Intro:
The European Parliament this week held a vote in Strasbourg on a strategy to improve reporting on end-of-life vehicles; cars that can no longer be driven and need to be disposed of. These cars should be disposed of in a specific way, not only because the metal oil and engine and palstic materials in a car can be harmful to the environment, but also because these cars contain valuable raw materials that can be reused.
A report came out last week showing that there are almost four million 'ghost cars' in Europe - those that were registered but have sine disapeared. Nobody knows where they are.
Deirdre Clune, a Fine Gael MEP for Ireland South, is pushing for these new reporting obligations to be adopted. Ireland, which has a collection scheme for these vehicles, but it isn't always used. In 2015, 92% of cars were collected and disposed of in the right way. That means 8% are left in fields or dumped in canals.
