George Washington Carver was one of the foremost agricultural scientists and inventors of the twentieth century.  John Pickle, Jr.'s father was mentored by Dr. Carver as one of his fifty boys ("adopted sons").  John Pickle talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about their relationship, as documented in his book, "One of His Boys, The Letters of Johnnie Pickle and His Mentor, George W. Carver." Carver used those friendships to smooth relations between the races.
