US Close 3 May 17: Markets finished higher as investors wait on big results and the FED.

 

US sharemarkets were modestly higher on Tuesday, in a volatile trading session. Investors waited on Apple's result after the close and also the FOMC rate decision due out on Wednesday. Energy shares were weaker on the back of the oil price. The S&P Energy sector lost 0.8%. In earnings news Coach shares rose 11.5% as the handbag maker cut back on discounting in the US and sold more expensive handbags. The Dow Jones rose by 36 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% while the Nasdaq lifted by almost 4 points or 0.1%.
