Morning Report 31 Jul 20: US sharemarkets were mixed on Thursday

The S&P500 and Dow Jones indexes were lower after the release of economic data which painted a worrying picture of the US economy. President Donald Trump floated the possibility of delaying the November 3 US presidential election, unnerving investors. The tech-heavy Nasdaq index was boosted by chipmaker Qualcomm's (+15.2%) strong sales forecast. And Apple, Amazon, Alphabet and Facebook shares rose by 0.5%-1.2% ahead of their earnings releases. United Parcel Service (+14.4%) and Procter & Gamble (+2.4%) shares both rose after posting solid quarterly results. The Dow Jones index fell by 226 points or 0.9%. The S&P500 index lost 0.4%. But the Nasdaq index climbed 44 points or 0.4%.
