Grew up Pentecostal but a skeptical nature
5 year old asking God to let me fly
Good father growing up, he was in touch with something real
Skepticism reasserted itself
Loss of faith was disorienting
Never found materialist view persuasive
Read new atheists and evangelical apologists
Everybody has an ax to grind
Shift was a lot of things collapsing
Broke up with girlfriend, lost job, being overcome with emotion
David foster wallace everybody worships, if you don’t choose it you will still worship
In the middle of the pain there was something really good coming out of it
There’s got to be something out there
The idea was an idea of redemption
It felt real and vivid, overcome with a sense of beauty
New girlfriend, double dated with a new couple
New friend who was a christian listening to Mark Ruttland
Friend was in a tragic accident, ended up paralyzed from the neck down
Started visiting him at the hospital
Started going to church again, not knowing what I believed
Knew that God loved his friend
Started going to a small group with him
About a year later found Jordan Peterson
Was having emotional experiences but this gave a language
Made me realize that the part of me that was smart and cynical had something to gain by its nihilism
I’m getting something from my nihilism
Divine justice
Calvinism
Owen Barfield
Humility of God. what does it cost god to create and redeem
The passion of God, the joy and the sorrow
Gratitude and wonder
