US Close 4 July 17: Early close for the US ahead of July 4

US sharemarkets were mostly higher on Monday with the exception being the Nasdaq. Financial and energy stocks led the gains in a shorter trading session. The S&P financial sector rose 1.3%, marking the sixth gain in seven sessions. The surge in oil prices resulted in the S&P energy sector gaining 2%. The Dow Jones hit an intra-day record high, up over 240 points in early trade before closing up 130 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 rose by 0.2% while the Nasdaq lost 30 points or 0.5%.
