Paul is writing to Christians in the city of Corinth
He is defending himself and his call by Jesus to be an apostle in the early Church
He is the father of this work in Corinth
1 Corinthians 4:15 “For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”
He planted the church
He won the first converts to the Lord
He discipled them and raised them up
He trained them and released them into their various ministries
He placed elders over the church …
And then moved on to another city that needed the Gospel of the Kingdom
After he left - - - as a result of various things happening within the local church in the city of Corinth and a letter they had sent to him … He began to correspond with them
The result: 1 and 2 Corinthians in your New Testament
The issues that needed to be dealt with meant that Paul:
Spoke correction
Chastised them
Advised them
Directed what they should do now
Spoke directly and somewhat strongly to the local leaders
Some of the leaders and the people took offence with him
And questioned his right to speak into the local church in the way that he did
This division and strife was led and fuelled by some “false” leaders
