This series of chapters is contained almost entirely within the happening music spot, The Eolian, where Kvothe attempts to “earn his pipes”. A small trinket fashioned to look like silver pipes, they will earn him money and clout if he is successful. But it is no easy task, as it takes a flawless and moving performance from a skilled artist, with most attempts not meeting the bar. Kvothe drinks with his good friends, makes a few new ones, and is reunited with an old one from months ago all in this one magical night at the Eolian.
