Four MEPs are battling it out to secure the nomination of the European Parliament’s biggest group to be its candidate in next year’s presidential elections. In a secret ballot tonight MEPs from the European People’s Party, the EPP, will choose from four candidates who include the Irish MEP Mairead McGuinness. She faces tough competition from a former EU Commissioner, a former Prime Minister and a senior French MEP. In January all of the MEPs in the Parliament will vote for a range of candidates in the presidential elections. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says if Mairead McGuinness wins tonight’s vote, she stands a good chance of taking the overall prize of the presidency of the European Parliament.
