Reimbursement of cross-border healthcare costs an issue – Clune

Patients in Ireland who avail of healthcare in another EU country, can have problems getting reimbursed for costs they incur when receiving treatment abroad.

That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Deidre Clune who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

MEPs today debated the state of the cross-border Healthcare Directive which came into force in 2013. It’s supposed to help EU citizens avail of healthcare in another EU state if they can’t access care in their own country.

However, patients have to pay for the service upfront and get reimbursed from the HSE afterwards. And that’s proving troublesome from some according to Deirdre Clune.
