US sharemarkets fell on Wednesday in response to a raft of economic and geopolitical worries. But shares in Netflix rose by 9.3% after the video-streaming company announced plans to expand operations to around 130 countries. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 252 points or 1.5% with the S&P 500 lower by 1.3% while the Nasdaq was down by 56 points or 1.1%.
US oil prices slumped on Wednesday. US gasoline stockpiles rose by 10.6 million barrels last week, the biggest increase since 1993. Worries about the health of the Chinese economy and doubts that key producers could co-operate to limit oil production also weighed on energy prices. Brent crude fell by US$2.19 or 6.0% to US$34.23 a barrel with US Nymex lower by US$2.00 or 5.6% to US$33.97 a barrel.
