Hitler had expected Britain to sue for peace after the continental victories, and had no plan for invading Britain. When Churchill made it clear there would be no surrender, Hitler was forced to scramble for a plan. Hermann Goring's Luftwaffe was tasked with the task of challenging the naval and air force of Britain in preparation for an invasion initially scheduled for August, but postponed until September, as the invasion force was simply unprepared.
