In Lum & Abner #130, “Ladies Uplift League Will Boycott Show,” opening day chaos strikes as the Pine Ridge Planetarium’s much-anticipated free matinee is abruptly canceled. The Ladies Uplift League storms in with a resolution banning the film “The Texas Kid,” claiming it’s unfit for the town’s youth. Lum and Abner are heartbroken—especially after seeing the disappointment on the children’s faces. But when the dust settles, it’s revealed that Squire Skimp is behind the boycott, using the League to sabotage their opening in favor of his own theater. With the truth exposed and the League furious at being manipulated, the boycott is lifted, and Squire’s opening night plans crumble when his film reel fails to arrive. Lum and Abner reclaim their spotlight with a second chance at opening Pine Ridge’s first movie theater.
