Carthy warns against any watering down of backstop deal.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is warning the government not to deviate when it comes to securing a permanent backstop deal if Brexit negotiations break down.

The backstop agreement is like an insurance policy that would keep Northern Ireland in the European Union's customs union and single market in the event of Brexit talks collapsing.

The border issue between Ireland and Northern Ireland remains a major barrier between the EU and the UK in reaching a deal on Brexit.

Hardline British Brexiteers had wanted to impose a time-limit on a backstop deal. However Matt Carthy has rubbished such a proposal.
