Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory
Text: James 1:1-4
Thesis: Joy is produced within us by the power of God.
1. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you experience trials of many”, because it
will ensure that we do not become stagnant in our Spiritual growth.
A. The expectation level is enormous from a human standpoint. It would be more than enough to
expect us to be joyful in troubles but “Pure” joy?
“Consider it pure joy”.
1. This type of expectation can only be accomplished by the power of God.
* Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
a. Stephen experienced pure joy at his execution because the
glory of God was upon him.
* “He looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God.”
Read Acts 7:54-60
B. James’ wording makes it clear that as Christians we will have trials in this life as Christians. It
is inevitable!
“My brothers, whenever…”
C. Trials will keep us alive in Christ! If we are not growing, we are dying and will become
stagnant in our Faith.
1. Jesus wants us to experience the Living Waters and not become
stagnant waters.
* “Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would
have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10
2. The purpose of trials is not to defeat us but make us stronger.
* “Because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”
3. James has in mind the type of trial that an Athlete might experience to make them
stronger.
D. Jesus “for the joy set before Him” endured the cross.
