The histories we are most familiar with place the origins of Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims and their 1621 harvest feast with the Wampanoag people. However, the root of the November celebration of Thanksgiving is more accurately attributed to George Washington and his Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789. The heart of the message and of the holiday was not about food, but about humbling ourselves and giving thanks to God.
