Steven Keene emerged from the vibrant folk scene of Greenwich Village in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Influenced by songwriting greats like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Woody Guthrie, Keene earned a reputation for his raw, poetic lyricism and commitment to craft over fame. His early work led to collaborations with former Dylan band members, and after a hiatus, he returned with renewed urgency, releasing Them and Us and Woke, tackling modern social issues with lyrical precision.
His new album, Notice Me, blends timeless storytelling with pointed commentary. The record features “This World is Your World,” a modern take on a Woodie Gutherie classic and ‘Thesauras,’ a playful, rapid-fire tribute to his songwriting heroes , recently featured in Rolling Stone.
Keene lives in the same New Jersey town as Bruce Springsteen and has a stake in a distillery making bourbon, two things that make him especially suited as guest on this particular podcast.
