A Chosen and Rejected Cornerstone

In the ancient world, the more important a building was, the more critically important the cornerstone would be.  Jesus is the fulfillment of many prophecies as the Cornerstone of what God is building.  What could God possibly be building that would require the Son of God to be the Cornerstone?
