Morning Report 16 Apr 21: US sharemarkets climbed to record levels on Thursday

Thursday saw the Dow Jones index topping 34,000 points for the first time ever. Falling bond yields sparked buying of technology stocks with shares of Netflix (+1.7%), Facebook (+1.7%), Alphabet (+1.9%) and Apple (+1.9%) all up. Shares of BlackRock (+2.1%) rose as its quarterly profit beat estimates. Bank of America (-2.9%) and Citigroup's (-0.5%) shares both fell after releasing earnings. Pepsi shares added 0.1% after quarterly sales topped estimates. UnitedHealth shares gained 3.8% after the insurer raised 2021 guidance. The Dow Jones index rose by 305 points or 0.9% and the S&P 500 index gained 1.1% -both closing at record highs. The Nasdaq index added 181 points or 1.3%.
