According to conventional wisdom, the first known steeping of green tea occurred in 2737 BC, during the reign of Emperor Shennong, a legendary sage and well-known figure in Chinese agricultural and medicinal mythology. Shennong and his caravan halted for a rest during one of their travels when a few tea leaves from a nearby burning tea twig dropped into his cup of boiling water.
