Are you paying attention to your life? Are you zoning out during habituated activities to the point that you don't even remember doing them right after you finished doing it? It can be brushing your teeth, taking a shower, getting dressed, cooking food, talking to family or friends, or...like me today, trancing out while driving my car.
The brain seeks to habituate many daily activities so it doesn't have to expend that much energy to complete an activity it finds repetitive. This is great when we don't have to think about tying our shoes, washing dishes, walking the dog, and the other hundreds, if not thousands, of activities we can start and finish on auto-pilot.
The issue with operating on cruise control during our days and throughout doing these kinds of habitual tasks is that we miss the nuances of life, the hidden gems that are the real beauty of our existence. I am not and I am - being all meta-physical on you right now.
There is beauty in the mundane. When we trance out during these repetitious behaviors, life is passing us by, and sometimes, once in a while, not all that often - we almost do something really stupid. Well, maybe I did just that, and there's the foreshadowing and cliffhanger to make sure you hit that play button and discover how you can step out of your state of trance.
