Macro or calorie counting is a great short term tool to get results in a short amount of time. BUT, I do believe everyone should aim to get to place where they can put their tracking aside at least for periods of time and trust themselves around food…guilt free. Macro or calorie counting is a great short term tool to get results in a short amount of time. BUT, I do believe everyone should aim to get to place where they can put their tracking aside at least for periods of time and trust themselves around food…guilt free. If you’ve been at this awhile and can’t put your tracker down without anxiety then you should take a hard look at the big picture.
If you just started a fat loss stage you may not be ready for intuitive eating anytime soon or at least not majority of time. Most people need to track their food to make sure are adhering to a calorie deficit. After the deficit during the reverse it is equally important to track and make sure meeting calorie goals each week to challenge the metabolism and at same time not add back a bunch of unwanted fat.
Once you hit maintenance and are maintaining your physique you should really start to understand what a typical day’s menu is like for you. You have been weighing food long enough you should be familiar with what typical portion sizes looks like for you. Start experimenting with not tracking one meal a week, then a full day, then a full weekend and beyond. See for yourself that your body can thrive without 100% perfection. Some days you may eat more, some days less.
Intuitive eating isn’t an all out free for all, eating whatever you want at all times. It is honoring your bodies hunger and fullness cues. I know tracking will always be there if I need it as a short term tool to dial in on a goal. Use your tracking time as a learning experience so maybe can transition to this point. I have never felt so free because the anxiety about perfection is gone.
