US Pre Close Report 5 Dec 18: US stocks retreat as markets climb a wall of worry

US sharemarkets slumped on Tuesday. The two key issues: doubts on a trade deal being secured between the US and China and doubts about the outlook for the US economy. The gap between long-term and short-term bond yields is the smallest in a decade, seen by some as a recession indicator. Banks, technolgy and industrials led the losses. With an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones was down by 575 points or 2.2%. The S&P500 index was lower by 2.2% and the Nasdaq index was down 189 points or 2.5%.
