Randy Stone, reporter for the Chicago Star, is walking in the north side of Chicago looking for a story. At first, he hears a single police siren at some distance away. Then, he hears another, and another. The number of sirens kept increasing to the point that it seem that the entire police force were converging to a single area. Then, one police car separated from the others and came down the street, stopping just a few yards away from him. The officer jumps out of the car and is hurrying to a call box. Randy asks "Hey Officer. what's up? It sounds like every police car in the city is out here." The officer says "I got no time, Mister, read about it in the newspaper tomorrow". Randy says "My name is Stone, Randy Stone of the Chicago Star". The officer asks "Are you a reporter?" Randy says "Yes, mildly, that's the calling". The officer Look, I've got no time to stand here gabbing, so I'll give it to you straight, Gig Sanvers busted loose". Randy says "Sanvers? Great, when and how? The officer says "Read it in your newspaper, Stone. Okay, across the next move, they've got him trapped". The officer gets back in his car to leave. Randy says to himself "Gig Sanvers, a two-time loser, a killer, loose in a city of four million people and every one his enemy". Randy hurried to a phone, checks with the police, and then drives over to the part of Chicago called the Badlands, that strange part of every city, surrounded by the business section, rundown, deteriorated, and filled with tenements and abandoned factories. It was there that the police had thrown a cordon around a boarded-up building. Randy's press pass let him go through and up to the front line. He asks Police Captain Ireland on the scene "Is Sanvers in that building?" The captain says "We got a tip he would be. Sanvers knows this neighborhood like the back of his hand". Randy asks "How did he get away?" The captain says "We haven't got the full report yet, but on his way to the death house, he killed a cop, and made his escape".
