He was previously a professor and director of American Indian Studies at California State University, Northridge (2010-2018). Dr. Burkhart’s research is in Native American philosophy, Indigenous environmental justice, and decolonization. His recent book is Indigenizing Philosophy through the Land: A Trickster Methodology for Decolonizing Environmental Ethics and Indigenous Futures. Dr. Burkhart is working on a current grant proposal to encourage more Native Students to pursue higher education, particularly studying philosophy. Brian Burkhart has extended family in the Navajo Nation, where he was born and raised.
