In this episode of Rosie Paulsen, we will talk about elder law together with our guest Edmund Spinks.

T. Edmund Spinks, the founder of Spinks Law Firm, has been practicing law in the area of elder law, social security, veteran’s benefits, and disability law for 20 years. Before practicing law, Mr. Spinks joined the Army as a smoke operations specialist and served in the Gulf War as a nuclear, biological, and chemical sergeant. Following his service in the Army, he was trained and certified as a firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) in Florida. He was employed by the Polk County fire department, where he became one of the founding members of the local FireFighter Union, IAFF 3531.

It’s important that while you’re still young you need to plan ahead, because we cannot predict what opportunity is ahead of us and we need to prepare for the worst ahead of time. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the next best time is now. Its the same with estate planning.  The capacity to understand is a very big deal as Edmund said. Once you lose your capacity and can’t understand the will you are signing, you can’t sign documents, and you can’t make important decisions.
 
Prior planning isn’t only important for your golden years, it’s also important in case of catastrophic illness or injury. Disability can happen and when it does, do you have a plan to take care of yourself? Planning for the unknown is a challenge, but it doesn’t need to be. Disability Medicare is a social security practice that helps families to shoulder their adult disabled person. It is very important to plan ahead for those who have special needs,  to save money, and set the needs without interfering with government benefits.
