The grim discovery led to an investigation, and Yendell's body was later found in Bristol City Docks, revealing he had died from severe head injuries before being thrown into the water.
Despite extensive inquiries, detectives struggled to find a motive for the murder. Initially, suspicion fell on Edward Witt, a friend of Yendell's wife, Susan. She had moved to Bournemouth with Witt but later returned to Bristol and reunited with her husband. Witt was arrested and charged with Yendell's murder, but charges were dropped weeks later, leaving the case unsolved. The police theorized that more than one person might have been involved, given Yendell's size.
