How I SURVIVED 4 Nazi Concentration Camps, 2 Death Trains, & 1 Death March | Ben Lesser

Today’s guest Ben Lesser (age 96) was born in Kraków, Poland in 1928. He was born into a family of seven, consisting of his mother, father, two sisters and two brothers. Ben was just 10 years old when the German army invaded Poland in 1939. One day, a group of Nazi soldiers stormed the Lesser family’s apartment, brutally beating them with pistols while ransacking their home. The Lesser’s were subject to countless amounts of abuse brought on by the Nazi soldiers. Together with his family, Ben avoided ending up in the Krakow Ghetto, managed to escape a Nazi pogrom, and lived through the notorious Bochnia Ghetto.

Ben would endure even more unimaginable horrors, surviving four concentration camps, including the infamous Auschwitz, two death trains, one being the infamous death train from Buchenwald to Dachau, of the 3,000 inmates (could have been up to 7,000) on that death train, Ben was one of only 18 who survived and is the last remaining survivor today. He also endured a grueling seven-week death march, covering approximately 284 miles. After so much suffering, he was liberated in Dachau in 1945. Ben and his older sister, Lola, would turn out to be the only remaining survivors out of his immediate family.

Since 1995, Ben has devoted his life to educating the world about the horrors of the Holocaust, sharing his personal story in schools and universities to ensure future generations never forget.

In 2009, he founded the ZACHOR Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, an organization committed to raising awareness and preserving the memory of the Holocaust for years to come.
