What is a true friend?
We have people in our lives of whom we refer to as “friends," whether these people are good friends, close friends, best friends, work friends or school friends, all friendships can only exist by combining trust, support, communication, loyalty, understanding, empathy and a bit of intimacy. I shall explain.
The Japanese have a term, kenzoku, which literally means "family." It implies the presence of the deepest connection of friendship.
Many of us have people in our lives with whom we feel the bond described by the word kenzoku. In terms friends, it could be someone whom we haven't seen in years but time and distances does nothing to diminish the bond we have with these kinds of friends.
What makes these friends worthy of the name kenzoku or like family??
They are commitmented to your happiness. A true friend is consistently willing to put your happiness before your friendship. It's said that "good advice grates on the ear," but a true friend won't refrain from telling you something you don't want to hear, something that may even risk fracturing the friendship, if hearing it lies in your best interest. They will not lack the mercy to correct you when you're wrong.
They won't ask you to compromise your principles/boundaries in the name of your friendship or anything else. EVER!
Friendships are relationships require effort from both parties. True friends give and take and never take advantage of the other.
Saying that, No friendship is perfect, some are toxic. They wear the disguise of friend in order to use and manipulate others. This person only maintains friendships as long as they fulfill a selfish purpose or goal. Once that person’s usefulness has expired, this toxic friend moves on.
Anyone who makes you feel drained, used or poorly about yourself should never be considered a friend. Never settle, even in friendships!!
Friends should help to soothe your soul and add positivity to your life. So when
when you do find these kenzoku friends, they're like priceless gems - treat them as such. And always remember, to be the friend you want to have.
