At 18 years of age, she signed a long-term contract with Paramount Pictures. The studio was drawn in by her beauty and had high hopes for her potential. Despite her extreme shyness, the studio took the approach that with acting coaches she would possibly become one of their biggest stars. Unfortunately, alcohol would be the choice of comfort to deal with shyness and anxiety at the most highest of levels. Several comebacks would be plagued by both mild and serious car accidents, periods of isolation, and an ongoing battle with alcoholism.
Her name is Gail Russell. A career that included films “The Uninvited” (1944) with Ray Milland, and with John Wayne in “Angel and the Badman” (1947). Despite her remarkable accomplishments as an actress, she would eventually be released by Paramount Pictures due to fears her drinking was worsening.
Gail Russell was only 36 years old when she was found dead in her apartment. What was found beside her speaks volumes of her emotional struggles. Did Gail Russell really want to be an actress? What was behind her chronic shyness that caused her so much distress in front of the camera? And what actually would make this silver screen beauty feel actual happiness and peace?
