Market Close 30 Aug 18: Flat finish as banks weigh; Telcos surge on merger news

The ASX 200 failed to hang on to earlier gains, finishing the session unchanged. The banks, miners and consumer staples were the biggest weights, offsetting strong gains from the telcos following news of a planned merger between TPG & Vodafone.
