The European Parliament is calling for EU countries to step up their defence cooperation. A majority of MEPs today voted for a resolution calling on the EU to tackle the deteriorating security in and around Europe by helping its armed forces to better work together. Such a move would be seen as a first step in building a common defence policy. The MEPs have also suggested that more money needs to be devoted to European defence including the establishment of multinational forces and an EU headquarters to plan and command crisis management operations. However, the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan, says she and her party are opposed to any such moves.
