Croatia came out eventual winners to equal their second-best FIFA World Cup finals finish third, but Morocco make history as the only African team to get so far in the competition. Reigning FIFA World Cup holders France took one step closer to retaining their world champions crown as they edged out England in a thrilling quarter-final clash. After enjoying the best of the first-half, the French side had to weather the storm as England dominated after the interval, but eventually did enough to win the game through Olivier Giroud's header. Harry Kane, who had earlier scored a penalty to draw England level and also equal Wayne Rooney's record goal tally for the Three Lions, also blazed another spot-kick over the bar as France eventually won the game to progress to the semi-final.
