Gender Wage Gap Part 2
Episode 004: Gender Wage Gap Part 2 | An experiment determining who stereotypes in the workplace. Description: New York University conducts an experiment that further suggests that discrimination is conducted more in the form of stereotyping and social assumptions of genders than some form of sexism. This supports the explanation that the disparity of treatment (or wages) between genders is a more subtle, implicit action than explicit. This helps put in perspective the situation to build a better bridge between the wage gap. Gender Wage Gap Part 1
Episode 003: Gender Wage Gap Part 1 | A look into the causes of the gender wage gap. Description: While many people in mainstream news are busy talking about the reality of whether or not a wage gap exists, or hwo to appropriately measure the gender wage disparity, there is a disconnect in a real explanation as to what's influencing it to begin with. There's an implication of male management causing this from some source of negative feelings towards females in the workplace. But is it really that obvious? Explicit discrimination, while it may exist in circumstances, doesn't exist on a widespread measure. So we're left with the beginning of one explanation to this, which is an implicit source of disparity in wages. The unspoken story behind this story is the role of stereotyping. Net Neutrality and the Recent FCC Decision
Episode 002: Net Neutrality and the Recent FCC Decision | A look into the Net Neutrality debacle. Learn some of the underlying philosophies and technical background of Net Neutrality. Get a glimpse into Net Neutrality from the it's popular history up to the recent FCC decision to regulate ISP's as a utility. Description: Net Neutrality can be subject that encompasses a variety of ideas that happen to be very different from one another. While it's not very likely we can understand every aspect of the topic, I've discussed some of the more prominent aspects of Net Neutrality in this episode of the podcast. The most prominent sub-topic discussed is that of filtering and controlling content on the internet under the cloak of enforcing anti-piracy. The prescedent established under those proposed efforts would involve setting up various content controls or filters across the internet that could, in theory, be very abused. "With great power comes great responsibility" - Peter Parker's Dad The FCC recently has come into the spotlight due to their deliberation and eventual decision to step in and reign a small bit of control over ISP's across the United States. This control has almost nothing to do with internet content filtering or control of any sorts. Rather, it has established some definitions and and boundaries ISP's must operate within. This decision kills efforts by ISP's to create speed tiers, also referenced as internet fast lanes (and a lot of slow lanes along with them). That being said, the FCC did this without explicit congressional approval and again, sets a prescedent for government controls over certain organizations of which the internet depends on to operate. Water Scarcity in California
Episode 001: Water Scarcity in California | A brief overview into the executive order by Governor Brown of California as a result of a major draught on top of an existing water scarcity. Description: The water scarcity in California has been an increasing problem in recent years. This winter's incredibly low snowpack was the straw that broke the camels back. Gov Brown has released an executive order mandated a 25% decrease in water usage for the remainder of the year. There are a number of ways people are planning on decreasing water consumption. But the question remains: How do we fairly distribute water to everyone in need when there's a water scarcity? It didn't take long for people to point fingers at who uses the most and why they should be deprived of their use more. The little-known story behind water usage in California is just how much agriculture California uses.
