Today I have Sonja Woodard owner of Sharper Image Salon in the guest chair. This interview is packed filled with how this salon owner has survived and thrived for over 30 years in the beauty industry.
Sonja started cosmetology school right out of High School and later realized that it was also a desire of hers to teach cosmetology as well. In 2011 she obtained her instructor’s license with the intent of teaching CEU Classes. Upon waiting to connect with a provider she obtained a part time position at Paul Mitchell the School, a brand she has always desired to work with. During the 5 years she spent at Paul Mitchell she worked her way up to a full time Education Leader while still owning her own salon.
One thing that she suggests to new stylist is to stay motivated and to be a people person. She also gives new stylist a few tips to choosing a place to work. Visit salons and look for growth opportunities. Being in the right environment and shadowing other stylists is also key to choosing.
She is also the founder of a segment “Mind Your Business Monday’s” that is dedicated to helping stylist learn the importance of the business skills needed to run a successful business.
