Almost 80 years ago a Launceston man, Sam Smith left Australia on the HMAS Hobart. He served in the Mediterranean, the Pacific and witnessed key events of World War II. For almost two years he kept a daily diary and his nephew, John Thorne and great-niece, Tara Anderson have written a book around the diary entries.
Sadly, Sam died when the Hobart was torpedoed on 23 July, 1943. His story lives on in this new book and his diary.
